Film

Salah satu hal yang unik ketika kita mempelajari suatu bahasa adalah kita bisa mempelajarinya melalui produk budaya populer. Film adalah salah satunya. Film dapat membantu kita mempelajari Bahasa Inggris. Bahkan ada beberapa orang yang bisa mahir berbahasa Inggris karena mempelajarinya dengan menonton film saja.

1. Watching movies is fun

Learning English by reading books can be boring and tiring. This is different from watching a movie. Watching is a fun and entertaining activity that can make us feel that we are not learning. Because it's fun, watching movies can also motivate us to learn through movies more often and diligently.

2. Movies provide real and varied English

The next reason why watching movies is a way to learn English is that films give us examples of using English in a real context. When we learn English words, it is sometimes difficult for us to remember their meaning or usage. Movies can help us remember the meaning and usage of these words because they provide the context and situations in which they are used.

The film also provides examples of the use of English in everyday conversations spoken directly by native English speakers. Therefore, we can directly learn common phrases and expressions in English along with how they are pronounced.

Here are the abilities that can increase when watching movies:

Listening Skills – through films we will hear English spoken naturally. By watching movies often, we will get used to listening to conversations between native English speakers. Gradually we will also understand what they are talking about.

Speaking Skills – watching movies can help us know the appropriate intonation when a word or phrase is said. What's more, we will know the pronunciation of a word through the film. Even better if after or while watching a movie we try to pronounce the words that the character in the film just said to practice kicking skills.

Vocabulary – watching movies can add to our English vocabulary. Movies can present new vocabulary, idioms, or phrases that we have never learned before. Sometimes we will also find slang (slang) in movies that we will not find in books.

3. Movies provide visual contexts

Movies provide a visual context that will make it easier for us to understand what the characters in the film are saying. Therefore, when we don't know the meaning of a word, idiom, or phrase in a film, we can guess its meaning by looking at the expressions and gestures of the characters in the film who say and listen to those words. When the film is over, we can look up the true meaning of the word in the dictionary or ask our English teacher directly. The visual context in film is also very suitable for English learners who have a dominant visual learning style.

4. Movies show native accents

There are various kinds of English accents. For example, the accents of British English (British English), American English (American English), Australian English (Australian English), Singaporean English (Singaporean English), and so on. When watching a movie, we will hear various English accents spoken. Knowing the English accent makes it easier for us to better understand English.

5. Movies give cultural insight

The next reason why we should try to learn English by watching movies is that films introduce the culture of native English speakers. Language is related to culture. To be more proficient in speaking, we also have to learn the culture. By watching movies, not only will we learn language, we will also learn culture.
